Chandigarh, 20 January 2025: Chandigarh experienced its warmest day this January on Sunday, with the maximum temperature rising sharply to 25.2°C—seven degrees above the seasonal average and nine degrees higher than Saturday’s 16.3°C.

This marks the highest temperature of the season since December 4, when the mercury touched 26.4°C.

According to India Meteorological Department (IMD) Chandigarh director Surender Paul, the sudden rise in temperature was triggered by a fresh Western Disturbance (WD).

“The WD altered the wind patterns, bringing clear skies and sunny conditions, which led to the spike. The same system is expected to bring snowfall to Himachal Pradesh until January 21,” he said.

Sunday’s maximum temperature exceeded January’s 2024 record of 22.4°C, though it remains lower than January 28, 1991, the all-time warmest January day at 31°C.

The minimum temperature also saw a marginal increase, moving from 8°C to 8.9°C—1.5 degrees above normal.

IMD forecasts suggest that the maximum temperature will hover between 24°C and 25°C over the next three days, while minimum temperatures are unlikely to dip significantly.

Another Western Disturbance is predicted to hit the region by Wednesday, bringing two days of rainfall and causing temperatures to drop once again.
