Chandigarh, September 13: Chandigarh has become the first city in the country to introduce a structured ‘sewa’ curriculum across all schools, making service-learning an integral part of education. The initiative, announced by the Education Department during sewa pakhwara 2025 (September 17–October 2), will cover 209 institutions, including 111 government and 98 private, aided and central schools, officials said.
The new curriculum will bring a dedicated “sewa period” into the weekly timetable for students of Classes VI to XII. Each month will revolve around a specific theme—such as kindness, inclusion, gratitude, environmental stewardship, or digital literacy—ensuring students not only study these values but also apply them in everyday life.
Education Secretary Prerna Puri said the programme is designed to go beyond academics. “This curriculum will ensure that students engage meaningfully with their communities and understand the dignity of service,” she noted.
Activities have been mapped to blend empathy, life skills and action. Students will take part in peer tutoring, create digital literacy modules for senior citizens, organise gratitude days for sanitation workers and support staff, and teach reading to underprivileged children. School walls will feature inspirational art, while cleanliness and fitness drives will be held in campuses and public parks. Reflection journals, peer recognition initiatives and collaborations with NSS, NCC and community organisations are also part of the framework.
Punjab Governor and Chandigarh Administrator Gulab Chand Kataria said the approach signals a shift in the city’s education model. “Education is not only about academic achievement but also about building character and values. By embedding ‘sewa’ into the learning process, Chandigarh is setting an example for the rest of the country,” he mentioned.
Chief Secretary Rajeev Verma said the programme will contribute to both personal and national development. “This initiative will help create a generation that not only excels academically but also works collectively towards the vision of a stronger and more inclusive India,” he observed.
Director School Education Harsuhinder Pal Singh Brar underlined its long-term significance. “The ‘sewa’ curriculum reflects our commitment to holistic education. We are giving students a platform to learn by serving and grow by giving, thereby strengthening the fabric of compassionate citizenship,” he said.
Officials said the curriculum is aimed at cultivating morality, service and unity among students, ultimately preparing them to be responsible citizens. By combining academic excellence with community action, the initiative seeks to nurture a generation capable of building a just, empathetic and sustainable society.
