CHANDIGARH, Sept. 22 — The southwest monsoon is likely to retreat from Chandigarh within the next few days, though brief, localized showers could continue until its withdrawal, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said Sunday.
IMD Chandigarh director Surender Paul noted that the system may exit the region in “the next three to four days.” He added, “We will have to watch out for Easterly Winds, which are still active in the region. If they continue to blow, the withdrawal may get pushed back by a couple of more days. However, we expect it to leave by the normal date.”
The monsoon began retreating from parts of the country on Sept. 14, but the withdrawal line has remained unchanged since Sept. 16. At present, it extends through Bathinda in Punjab and Fatehabad in Haryana. For Chandigarh, the normal withdrawal date is Sept. 25. Last year, the retreat was declared a week later, on Oct. 2.
With clear skies and sunny weather returning, day temperatures are expected to climb gradually. On Sunday, the city recorded a maximum of 34°C, marginally lower than Saturday’s 34.1°C but still one degree above normal. The minimum temperature rose slightly to 23.5°C, compared to 22.8°C the previous day, though it remained a degree below normal.
According to the forecast, the maximum temperature over the next three days will hover around 35°C, while the minimum is likely to stay near 24°C.
