Chandigarh/New Delhi, June 4: A second-year undergraduate student from Chandigarh, studying biomechanical engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi, was found dead under unexplained circumstances in his hostel room on Wednesday, police said.

The 20-year-old student was discovered unconscious and unresponsive on his bed after fellow students reported his absence to the campus security staff. “We received a PCR call at the Kishangarh police station regarding a locked hostel room with no response from inside,” a senior police officer said. “With help from the fire department, the door was broken open. The student was declared dead by campus doctors.”

While there were no visible injury marks on the body, vomit found on the floor near the bed has raised suspicions of a medical complication. “It appears the student may have suffered a sudden medical episode,” the officer said. “However, only the post-mortem will confirm the cause of death.”

Preliminary inquiry suggests that the student was last seen two days earlier during dinner. His prolonged absence prompted classmates to raise the alarm.

A forensic team was deployed to examine the room and gather evidence. The body has been shifted to Safdarjung Hospital, where an autopsy is being conducted.

As of now, IIT-Delhi has not issued any official statement regarding the incident.

The police said further investigation is underway, and they are in contact with the student’s family.
