Chandigarh, May 25 — The Chandigarh Housing Board (CHB) has launched a crackdown on allottees of small flats who have failed to pay their monthly licence fees, initiating eviction proceedings against dozens of defaulters over the past week.
In the last four days alone, eviction notices have been served to occupants of 60 small flats in various parts of the city. Each of them has been given a one-month deadline to vacate their premises or face forcible removal, CHB officials confirmed.
“These units were unauthorisedly occupied after the cancellation of allotments due to non-payment of dues,” a CHB spokesperson said. “Most defaulters owe more than ₹1 lakh, with some cases exceeding ₹2 lakh.”
The board stated that the monthly licence fee of ₹800 had not been deposited for years by many allottees, leading to mounting arrears. Under the terms of the Small Flats Scheme-2006, these flats were originally allotted to families relocated from slum colonies.
On May 19, the CHB issued notices to 10 defaulters in Ram Darbar and six in Sector 49. This was followed by notices for two flats in Sector 56 on May 21. The largest round of action came on May 22, when 16 flats in Sector 14 (West), Dhanas, 10 in Sector 56, and another 16 in Sector 38 (West) were targeted with eviction orders.
“We’ve been left with no choice. Despite repeated reminders and opportunities to clear their dues, these residents continued to occupy the flats without paying rent,” the official added.
The CHB had constructed around 20,000 flats under the 2006 scheme to provide housing to economically weaker sections. The current eviction campaign marks one of the largest enforcement actions under the scheme to date.
