CHANDIGARH — Senior Aam Aadmi Party leader and Cabinet Minister Harpal Singh Cheema raised concerns over interstate law enforcement and prison administration, calling on Union Home Minister Amit Shah to outline the Centre’s strategy to dismantle cross-border criminal networks. Speaking at a press conference on Monday ahead of Shah’s visit to Punjab, Cheema questioned how organized criminal activities and extortion threats continue to operate across state lines.
Cheema specifically pointed to cases involving high-profile incarcerated figures, asking why criminal networks managed to maintain operational reach despite leaders being held in high-security facilities like Gujarat’s Sabarmati Jail. He referenced recent security incidents, including reported firing incidents in Mumbai targeting public figures, as evidence of broader security challenges across multiple states including Haryana, Gujarat, Rajasthan, and Maharashtra.
Emphasizing the Punjab government’s enforcement actions, Cheema highlighted the state’s ongoing ‘Yudh Nashean Virudh’ campaign and anti-gangster operations conducted by the Punjab Police. He stressed that addressing organized crime and drug trafficking requires coordinated inter-state investigations and central agency cooperation, urging political leaders to prioritize institutional accountability over rhetoric.
