NEW DELHI, OCT 12: Chief Justice of India Surya Kant declined a request from Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi and Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge for a meeting on Monday to discuss matters related to the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.

Sources confirmed that the CJI formally responded to the letter, stating that such a meeting would be inappropriate given that the matters raised are currently sub-judice before the Supreme Court.

The response maintained that under the constitutional framework, the apex court cannot intervene in the administrative functioning of the government.

The Congress leaders were advised to approach the court on the judicial side for any relief regarding fundamental rights, noting that fresh petitions could be considered alongside existing pending matters.

A Supreme Court Bench headed by CJI Surya Kant had previously upheld the validity of the SIR exercise on May 27.
