Chandigarh, November 22, 2024: A clash erupted between farmers and police in Bathinda’s Dunewala village, fueled by ongoing protests against the central government’s ‘Bharat Mala Project’.
Tensions have been rising in the region over the acquisition of land for the project, leading to the altercation.
When the administration, accompanied by police, attempted to acquire land, farmers strongly opposed the move, resulting in a violent confrontation.
In response, police resorted to a lathi-charge to disperse the protesters.
DIG Bathinda Harcharan Singh Bhullar and DC Bathinda Shaukat Ahmed Pare addressed the situation, stating that compensation has been provided to the farmers for the land in question.
They further claimed that the protesting farmers, many from neighboring districts, are undermining law and order.
The authorities warned that any attempts to encroach on land designated for the National Highway Authority would be met with strict action.
The police urged those with concerns to arrange a meeting with the Deputy Commissioner.
