Chandigarh, 14 October, 2024: Congress Haryana in-charge Deepak Babaria announced on Monday that he has tendered his resignation, accepting moral responsibility for the party’s defeat in the recent assembly elections.

Babaria revealed that he offered his resignation to the party’s high command immediately after the election results were announced last week.

However, he has yet to receive a response regarding his offer. “Last week, after the results, I offered to resign. I told the high command that if they deemed it appropriate, they could replace me. My health is not well, and I believe it is my moral responsibility in light of the results,” he stated.

He noted that he had also offered to resign from his role as in-charge of Delhi following the Lok Sabha elections, but no decision was made at that time. “Similarly, no decision has been made for Haryana, but I felt it was my duty to make the offer,” he added.

In response to the party’s unexpected defeat in Haryana, Congress leadership convened a review meeting last Thursday.

They decided to form a fact-finding team to interview all candidates and investigate the reasons for the loss.

Sources indicate that the leaders are also looking into allegations of “discrepancies” in electronic voting machines (EVMs) raised by party candidates.

The review meeting was attended by Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, former party chief Rahul Gandhi, AICC general secretary organization KC Venugopal, senior observers Ashok Gehlot and Ajay Maken, and other AICC secretaries for the state, with Babaria joining remotely.

The Congress party had initially expressed confidence in overcoming the BJP, which has been in power for a decade and was facing anti-incumbency. However, the BJP secured 48 seats, thwarting Congress’s efforts to reclaim its position and contradicting exit polls, while Congress managed to win only 37 of the 90 seats in the assembly.
