CHANDIGARH, SEPT 30: The Congress high command is finalizing the selection of a new Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee president to succeed incumbent chief Amrinder Singh Raja Warring, with an official announcement expected shortly.
Party insiders maintain that former Olympian and Jalandhar Cantt MLA Pargat Singh, Raja Sansi MLA Sukhbinder Singh Sarkaria, and Amritsar MP Gurjeet Singh Aujla are among the primary contenders shortlisted by the party leadership. A three-member panel of leaders, alongside former Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi, has been under active consideration by the central leadership, including Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra.
All three leading candidates hold organizational responsibilities as co-chairpersons of the party’s Manifesto Committee for the upcoming 2027 Punjab Assembly elections. Pargat Singh previously served as PPCC general secretary (organisation), while Sarkaria held the post of PPCC vice-president and cabinet minister, and Aujla is a two-time Member of Parliament.
Party leaders affirmed that senior state figures have been camping in Delhi as consultations continue to ensure the next state chief can reconcile factional differences and build a cohesive campaign structure across all regions.
