NEW DELHI, SEPT 30: The 19-party INDIA alliance on Wednesday announced a multi-stage nationwide campaign against the Election Commission, accusing the central government of undermining democratic processes and interfering with voter registries.
Addressing a joint press conference alongside senior alliance leaders including Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, and Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge declared that district-level ‘Save Democracy’ demonstrations will be staged across the country from October 2 to 8. The protests will be followed by a march of all Opposition Members of Parliament to the Election Commission headquarters on October 6 and a major national rally in Delhi on November 1.
The Opposition coalition set forth a six-point agenda focused on comprehensive electoral reform, including an absolute demand for a return to physical ballot papers in place of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs). The leaders also called for complete transparency in electoral roll revisions, protected registration for young voters, and institutional safeguards against arbitrary voter deletions.
Alliance leaders maintained that the joint mobilization aims to safeguard constitutional norms and restore public confidence in the electoral system ahead of upcoming polls.
