Couples Should Have 3 Children: RSS Chief

New Delhi, December 2, 2024: Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat has stirred controversy by urging couples to have at least three children, citing concerns over declining population growth.

Speaking at the ‘Kathale Kul Sammelan’ in Nagpur, Bhagwat highlighted the risk posed by a total fertility rate (TFR) below 2.1, warning that it could lead to societal extinction.

“The decline in population is a matter of concern,” Bhagwat remarked. “Modern population science says that when the fertility rate of a society goes below 2.1, that society vanishes from the earth. Many languages and societies have disappeared this way. The population should not fall below 2.1.”

Bhagwat also emphasized the family’s role as a cornerstone of society, underscoring its importance in societal stability and growth.

His statements, however, drew sharp criticism from opposition parties, particularly in Bihar, where population control and caste-based census remain contentious issues. Critics accused Bhagwat of hypocrisy, pointing to the BJP’s push for a Uniform Civil Code (UCC).

“Bhagwat should give this advice first to BJP members themselves if they plan to implement the UCC,” said a leader from the opposition.

The remarks have reignited debates over population control policies and their socio-political implications, further polarizing opinions on the issue.
