CPDL inducts women into frontline power operations

Chandigarh, Jan 7: Chandigarh Power Distribution Limited (CPDL) has begun deploying women in frontline field operations, marking a first-of-its-kind move in India’s power distribution sector.

Under the initiative, more than 35 women have already been onboarded and are fully operational across Chandigarh, handling roles traditionally dominated by men, including meter reading and bill distribution. The utility has proposed engaging a total of 60 women, which would constitute 50 per cent of its frontline operational workforce, with phased expansion planned across additional service areas.

The women field professionals conduct door-to-door meter readings using handheld digital devices, record electricity consumption data, distribute bills, address basic consumer queries and report discrepancies to supervisory teams.

CPDL officials said the programme reflects the organisation’s push towards an inclusive and future-ready workforce, while also restructuring field operations through modified staffing patterns.

The initiative is being seen as a significant step in broadening women’s participation in core operational roles within the power distribution sector.
