CHANDIGARH, July 14 — A cyclist died after being hit by a speeding car at the busy 33/34/44/45 chowk on Saturday morning, prompting police to register a case under the newly implemented Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
According to officials at the Sector 34 Police Station, an FIR has been filed under Sections 106 (causing death by negligence), 125 (rash and negligent driving), and 281 (endangering personal safety of others).
The incident occurred around 9:15 a.m. when the victim, Atul, a friend of Sector 45 resident Ankit Bajpai, was struck by a white car with a Haryana registration number. The vehicle was allegedly driven by Akshu Jain, a resident of Model Town, Sector 126, Mohali.
“Atul was riding a bicycle when he was hit. He sustained serious injuries,” said Bajpai, who witnessed the crash and alerted emergency services. Atul was first taken to Healing Hospital in Sector 34, and later referred to the Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), Sector 32, where he succumbed to his injuries during treatment.
Police have begun an investigation into the accident and are verifying the details of the driver and the vehicle. A senior officer said appropriate legal action will follow based on the findings.
