Chandigarh, 3 December 24: Jagjit Singh Dallewal, convener of the Samyukt Kisan Morcha (Non-Political), called on Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar to press the central government into addressing key farmer grievances, including a legal guarantee on Minimum Support Price (MSP), implementation of the Swaminathan Commission report, and loan waivers for farmers.

Speaking from the Khanauri protest site, where his indefinite hunger strike entered its seventh day, Dallewal reiterated the urgency of the demands. Medical checks revealed he had lost over 8 kilograms since November 26, with his blood pressure at 146/96, pulse at 96 beats per minute, sugar level at 74 mg/dL, and body temperature at 94°F.

“Dhankhar holds the second-most powerful position in the country. He has the influence needed to compel the government to act on these pressing issues,” said Dallewal. He also noted that some Members of Parliament had assured farmers they would introduce a private member’s bill in Parliament to address these concerns. “If they fail to fulfill their promise, people will ensure they face consequences,” he warned.

Dallewal expressed disappointment over the government’s silence. “No message for talks has come from the Centre. If a tragic incident, such as the loss of a leader on hunger strike, happens here, it will ignite widespread unrest across Punjab and the nation,” he cautioned.

Highlighting the dire state of the farming community, Dallewal said farmer suicides could only be curbed through comprehensive action, including implementing the Swaminathan report, securing MSP guarantees, and waiving loans. “If the government truly wishes to safeguard the future of agriculture, it must accept these demands,” he said.

Farmers have maintained their protests at Shambhu, Khanauri, and Rattanpura borders for over 10 months, yet their voices remain unheard. “Our patience is wearing thin, but our resolve remains strong,” Dallewal concluded.
