CHANDIGARH, 12 November 2024: Punjab Police transferred Dera Baba Nanak’s Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Jasbir Singh on Tuesday, acting on a directive from the Election Commission of India (ECI). The decision follows a complaint lodged by Gurdaspur MP and former Deputy Chief Minister Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa, whose wife, Jatinder Kaur, is contesting the Dera Baba Nanak assembly bypoll. She faces competition from AAP’s Gurdeep Singh Randhawa and BJP’s Ravikaran Singh Kahlon.

The Election Commission instructed the Chief Electoral Officer of Punjab to immediately relieve Jasbir Singh of his duties and requested a list of suitable replacements for the DSP post.

Responding to this directive, Punjab’s Director General of Police (DGP) transferred Jasbir Singh to the Punjab Armed Police (PAP) headquarters.

Sukhjinder Randhawa had recently accused Jasbir Singh of colluding with gangster Jaggu Bhagwanpuria.

He raised concerns that Singh might facilitate harm to him or his supporters, allegedly through Bhagwanpuria’s associates. Randhawa claimed that the gangster, currently jailed in Haryana, had been threatening local leaders and sarpanches via video calls, particularly targeting those with substantial vote banks. In response, Randhawa wrote to the Election Commission, urging election observer Anburajan KNN to take immediate action.
