Chandigarh, Sept 14 — The Anti-Narcotics Task Force (ANTF) of UT police has busted an inter-state drug syndicate, arresting five men and seizing 742 grams of charas valued at more than ₹2.22 lakh in the illegal market.

According to police, ASI Rohtas Singh and his team, while on patrol duty in the early hours of September 8, received a tip-off about a group transporting narcotics from Himachal Pradesh to Chandigarh. Around 3:15 am, officers intercepted a car at the new barricade chowk and arrested four men.

The accused were identified as Gaurav Kumar, 35, a water carrier employed at the Punjab Secretariat; Ajay, 25; Abhishek, 23; and Amit Kumar, 29, all working as sweepers at the same secretariat on DC rates. Police recovered 597 grams of charas from their possession and impounded the vehicle.

Based on Gaurav’s disclosures, police later arrested the main supplier, Kulwant Singh, 35, a resident of Shimla district, from Parwanoo. Officers seized 145 grams of charas from him. Investigators said Kulwant, a farmer, was cultivating illicit cannabis in his apple orchards in Shimla.

“Preliminary investigations reveal that the accused, who were also addicts, purchased charas in bulk from Kulwant at low rates and sold it across the Tricity for profit,” police said in a statement.

Gaurav and Kulwant have been remanded to police custody for further interrogation, while the other three accused have been sent to judicial custody.
