Rajpura/Banur, August 17, 2025: Former Municipal Council President Lachman Singh Changera, sitting Akali councillors and several local social workers joined the Congress party on Sunday, bringing with them hundreds of supporters in Banur.
The group included ex-councillors Amandeep Singh and Bakshish Singh Changera, as well as social activists Manish Kataria and Ekam Jot Singh. Their formal induction was marked at a public function attended by senior Congress leadership.
Welcoming them into the party, Congress state general secretary and former MLA Hardayal Singh Kamboj said the move reflected growing anger against the Aam Aadmi Party government. “People across Punjab are dissatisfied with the anti-people and oppressive policies of AAP. They want a Congress government back in power,” Kamboj noted while addressing the gathering.
Changera, who had earlier served as Municipal Council President and continues to hold a councillor’s post, said his supporters were eager to strengthen Congress in Banur.
“Our decision to join Congress will give the party strong backing in the city,” he mentioned.
Congress leader and Derabassi Assembly constituency in-charge Deepinder Singh Dhillon, who attended the event, accused AAP of misleading voters.
“Kejriwal and his party have built their politics entirely on lies,” Dhillon said.
The new entrants were formally felicitated by Kamboj, who assured them of “due respect and full participation” within the party.
The programme also saw the presence of several local leaders, including Banur Municipal Council President Jagtar Singh Kamboj, Youth Congress city president Harpreet Singh Sonik, former councillor Gurmel Singh, Yadvinder Sharma, councillor Soni Sandhu, Dharamvir Shaili Jhiur Mazra, Bhag Singh, Bir Chand Banur, among others, along with scores of Congress workers.
