Mumbai, 22 November 2024: A reactor explosion at the Myanmar Chemical Company fertiliser plant in Shalgaon MIDC, Kadegaon tehsil of Maharashtra’s Sangli district, led to a gas leak that killed three persons, including two women, and hospitalised nine others, officials reported on Friday.
The blast occurred around 6:30 PM on Thursday, releasing chemical fumes suspected to be ammonia, according to Sangli Superintendent of Police Sandip Ghuge. “Twelve individuals were affected by the gas leak and taken to hospitals. Tragically, two women workers and a security guard succumbed, while nine others are under treatment,” said Sangram Shewale, senior inspector at Kadegaon police station.
The deceased have been identified as Suchita Uthale (50) from Yetgaon in Sangli district and Neelam Rethrekar (26) from Masur in Satara district.
Seven of the injured have been admitted to Sahyadri Hospital in Karad, with five in critical condition in the ICU, officials confirmed. Investigations are ongoing to ascertain the cause of the explosion and assess the extent of the damage.
Authorities are working to ensure the safety of workers and mitigate risks in the wake of the accident. Further updates are awaited.
