Chandigarh, May 28 – A 40-year-old man from Firozabad, Uttar Pradesh, who had been referred from Ludhiana to the Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), Sector 32, Chandigarh, died on Wednesday after testing positive for Covid-19, hospital authorities confirmed.
“This is the first confirmed Covid-19 fatality in Chandigarh amid the current nationwide uptick in cases,” said Dr GP Thami, Medical Superintendent of GMCH-32. The patient, who had been working in Ludhiana, was admitted two days ago with respiratory complications. He tested positive on Tuesday and succumbed in the early hours of Wednesday while in isolation in the hospital’s designated Covid ward.
The case has raised concerns about the renewed spread of the virus, especially in northern regions of the country.
Just a day earlier, health officials in Ferozepur reported a 25-year-old man testing positive for Covid-19. The patient, employed at a private firm in Gurugram, had recently returned home to Ferozepur feeling unwell. “He was immediately isolated at home after testing positive,” said Dr Rajwinder Kaur, Civil Surgeon, Ferozepur. “There is no need to panic. We are tracing all his contacts and taking appropriate precautions.”
Additionally, a 51-year-old woman from Yamunanagar, Haryana, tested positive for the virus last week at a private hospital in Mohali, further signaling scattered outbreaks in the region.
Health officials across Punjab, Haryana, and Chandigarh are urging residents to follow safety protocols, report symptoms promptly, and avoid unnecessary travel, particularly to high-risk areas. Surveillance, contact tracing, and testing are being ramped up in the wake of the fresh cases.
