Ludhiana/Brampton Nov 26, 2025 — Shock and grief have engulfed Guram village after five members of a local family died in a house fire in Brampton, Canada, last week. Among the victims was the unborn child of Arashveer Kaur, who survived by jumping from the roof but suffered severe injuries that led to a miscarriage, relatives said.
Only Jugraj Singh, the lone family member inside the home at the time of the blaze, managed to escape. “He was the only one who came out alive. The rest of the family was trapped,” said Happy Shankar, a close relative. He said Jugraj’s mother-in-law, sister-in-law, niece and his wife’s cousin were unable to make it out.
Arashveer, who was on the rooftop during the fire, leapt in a desperate attempt to save herself. Her injuries remain serious, relatives added.
Former sarpanch Ranvir Singh Mehmi said one of the deceased was an unmarried woman from the village. “She was burned alive inside the house. The family is shattered,” he said, adding that many members had migrated to Canada in recent years in search of better opportunities.
Mehmi noted that relatives from Punjab have already left for Canada as they await further information. “No decision has been taken yet about the last rites. Everyone is in deep shock,” he said.
