Chandigarh, 8 January 2025: Dense fog enveloped several parts of Punjab and Haryana on Wednesday, significantly reducing visibility and accompanying cold weather. Chandigarh, the joint capital of both states, recorded a minimum temperature of 8.3 degrees Celsius, three degrees below normal, with visibility at 80 meters, according to the Meteorological Department.
Punjab experienced near-zero visibility in Amritsar, while Ludhiana and Patiala reported visibility of 20 meters and 10 meters, respectively. Sangrur emerged as the coldest place in Punjab, with a minimum temperature of 3 degrees Celsius, six degrees below normal. Other recorded minimums included Amritsar at 3.5 degrees, Ludhiana at 6.8 degrees, and Patiala at 7.4 degrees. Pathankot reported 8.6 degrees, Bathinda 4.5 degrees, and Gurdaspur 4.0 degrees.
In Haryana, visibility was severely affected in Karnal and Ambala, with temperatures across the state also dipping. Hisar recorded a minimum of 6.4 degrees Celsius, Ambala 9.3 degrees, Karnal 7.5 degrees, Narnaul 5.0 degrees, Rohtak 7.7 degrees, Bhiwani 5.0 degrees, and Sirsa 6.0 degrees.
Cold and foggy conditions are expected to persist in the region in the coming days, the Met office warned.
