It is believed that religious activities performed on this day are many times more fruitful than on normal days. On Ganga Dussehra, worshiping Lord Shiva along with Mother Ganga, offering offerings to ancestors, offering lamps and bathing in Ganges are acts that purify the soul. What do you do on Ganga Dussehra?

  • On the day of Ganga Dussehra, it is considered very auspicious to light a lamp on the bank of Ganga or in the place of worship of the house and let the water flow. It is believed that fathers are satisfied with this and life is filled with happiness and prosperity.
  • If possible, take a bath in the river Ganga on this day. Otherwise, take a bath with a few drops of Ganga water in your bath water. Doing this leads to mental, physical and spiritual purity.
  • On this day, donating heat-relieving items like pots filled with water, chappals, umbrellas, sattu, clothes, fans etc.
  • Abhishek Lord Shiva with Mother Ganga. According to the scriptures, Shiva ji held the Ganga in his jatas. Therefore, joint worship of these two is considered to be particularly fruitful.
  • Chant ‘ॐ नामः शिवाय’ or ‘ॐ गंगायई नामः’ mantra. Keep your mind, speech and actions restrained by fasting. This is a great opportunity for spiritual growth.

Don’t donate old clothes and broken items:

While donating, make sure that the items are usable and clean. Donating torn clothes or broken utensils feels like guilt instead of virtue.

Avoid donating black items:

According to scriptures, it is considered inauspicious to donate black colored items on Ganga Dussehra. It can cause family discord or mental stress.

Stay away from lies, deceit, bitterness and insults:

Take special control over your speech and behavior on this day. Someone’s insult, deceit or anger gives rise to sin. Ganga Dussehra is a festival of self-purification, and not only

Do not damage the trees:

Have love and compassion towards nature on this holy day. It is considered inauspicious to cut, break or burn trees and plants.
