Bathinda, March 23 — The Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) has detained gangster-cum-drug lord Jaggu Bhagwanpuria under the Prevention of Illicit Traffic in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (PIT-NDPS) Act for a minimum period of one year. Bhagwanpuria, also an accused in Sidhu Moosewala’s murder, was transferred to Silchar Central Jail in Assam on Saturday evening.

A joint team of Punjab Police and NCB officials escorted him from Bathinda high-security jail to Chandigarh airport before flying him to Silchar. Bhagwanpuria, whose real name is Jagdeep Singh, is the first Punjab gangster booked under the PIT-NDPS Act.

Known for his extensive cross-border narcotics smuggling network along the India-Pakistan border, Bhagwanpuria allegedly continued coordinating drug trafficking, extortion, and violent activities from jail using smuggled phones and encrypted communication channels. His criminal record includes 128 cases, with 12 under the NDPS Act.

Following a detailed probe, NCB invoked PIT-NDPS after uncovering evidence of his jail-based operations and international drug links with suppliers in Pakistan, Canada, and the US.

The action, ordered by the Government of India’s Joint Secretary (PIT-NDPS) on March 21, aims to dismantle his criminal influence in Punjab and beyond.
