Mohali, June 15: Mohali CIA staff had a brief but intense encounter with wanted gangster Sandeep near the DC office close to Lakhnaur village, during which the accused sustained a bullet injury in the leg following retaliatory firing by the police.

Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Harmandeep Hans confirmed that Sandeep is a notorious criminal with a history of serious offenses, including two murders, kidnapping, and several cases under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. “He is not only wanted in Punjab but also in Himachal Pradesh,” Hans said.

According to the police, Sandeep had recently committed a brutal murder in Mohali about 10 days ago and had been on the run since. Acting on a tip-off that he would be passing through the area, police units surrounded the spot and asked him to surrender.

“Instead of complying, he opened fire at the police — firing four to five rounds,” SSP Hans said. “In retaliatory action, police shot him in the leg to prevent his escape.”

A .32 bore pistol was recovered from the accused during the operation. Officials believe that Sandeep may have access to multiple weapons. “He used a .315 bore firearm during the recent murder, which indicates he either possesses or has access to various arms. We are investigating the source and possible supply links,” Hans added.

Sandeep has been taken into custody and shifted to a hospital for treatment. Further investigations are ongoing.
