Sangrur, 24 February 2025: A gangster was shot in the leg by police on Sunday after he attempted to escape custody and fired at officers using an imported weapon he had hidden in a village.
Maninder Singh, who was lodged in a state jail, was brought to Nadampur village in Bhawanigarh by Sangrur police to retrieve the concealed weapon. As soon as he retrieved the firearm, he opened fire at the police team, an officer said.
“The gangster fired multiple rounds, with one bullet grazing a policeman’s turban and another hitting a police vehicle,” the officer added. Police retaliated in self-defense, injuring him in the leg.
Senior Superintendent of Police Sartaj Singh Chahal said the district police recently received intelligence about a gang planning targeted killings in Sangrur.
Two individuals were arrested with pistols, and during their interrogation, police learned that the weapons were supplied by Maninder Singh.
Following this lead, police secured a production warrant to bring him from jail. Singh later revealed he had hidden an imported weapon near a canal in Nadampur.
When a police team led by CIA in-charge Inspector Sandeep Singh took him for recovery, he grabbed the loaded firearm and opened fire.
The injured gangster was taken to the local Civil Hospital for treatment.
