Ghibli-Inspired Art Used in Online Scams, Warns Chandigarh Police

Chandigarh, April 5: Chandigarh Police have issued a warning to residents following a spike in cybercrimes exploiting the growing popularity of digital artwork inspired by Studio Ghibli. The advisory from the cyber cell outlines multiple scams designed to steal data, defraud users and infect devices with malicious software.

“Cybercriminals are taking advantage of the public’s interest in Ghibli-themed content to launch deceptive schemes,” said a senior cybercrime officer.

According to the advisory, one of the most common scams involves fake online stores claiming to offer official merchandise or limited-edition Ghibli fan art. These websites often disappear after a transaction or deliver counterfeit goods while harvesting users’ personal and financial details.

The police also raised concerns over phishing emails designed to mimic Studio Ghibli promotions or giveaways. Users are lured into clicking links that lead to clone websites or malicious downloads, often resulting in identity theft or malware infections.

Another tactic involves ransomware hidden in free digital content, such as wallpapers or fan art downloads. Once installed, the software can lock devices, extract browser data, or access personal files without permission.

Cyber officers also pointed to the growing presence of fake artist profiles posing as legitimate fan creators. These accounts trick followers into paying for non-existent commissions or divulging private information.

Residents have been advised to buy merchandise and download digital content only from verified and trusted platforms. “Avoid clicking on unknown links or sharing sensitive information like card details and passwords unless the platform is secure,” the advisory said.

Chandigarh Police have urged the public to stay vigilant as these scams continue to evolve alongside digital trends.
