Mohali, March 23 —What was initially suspected to be a severed dog head during a raid at a momo factory in Mohali’s Mataur on March 17 has been confirmed as goat meat by the district animal husbandry department.
The controversial discovery in the factory’s unhygienic kitchen had triggered nationwide outrage over food safety and animal cruelty concerns. However, after examination by senior veterinary officers, the flesh—measuring 10 inches by 6 inches and weighing around half a kilogram—was identified as goat meat. “The backbone was visible, and the analysis suggests it belonged to either a buck or a doe goat,” the department’s report stated.
Mohali deputy commissioner Komal Mittal confirmed that the inspection revealed severe hygiene violations. Food samples, along with the recovered flesh, were sent for testing. Factory owners Arzudeen and Joginderpal Singh, who remain absconding, were booked for spreading infection and adulteration following a complaint by a food safety officer.
