Chandigarh, March 23 — Facing a severe fund shortage, the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation (MC) plans to transfer all V3 roads (sector-dividing roads) under its jurisdiction to the UT administration for carpeting and maintenance. The proposal, covering 262 km of road network, will be tabled for discussion and approval during the civic body’s general House meeting on Tuesday.
The move comes as the MC struggles to fund essential road repairs for the second consecutive season. “Due to scarcity of funds, the carpeting work for the last three years is pending. The total cost involved is approximately ₹26 crore,” the agenda document stated.
The V3 network includes 68 roads, which are typically carpeted every five years after physical verification. However, with tenders for major roadworks still unopened due to the financial crunch, key repairs remain stalled.
If approved, the UT engineering department will take over the responsibility for carpeting and maintaining these roads, potentially easing the financial strain on the MC.
The civic body currently maintains 2,000 km of roads across Chandigarh, including V4 (shopping streets), V5 (sector circulation roads), V6 (access roads to houses), and parking lots in various sectors, rehabilitation colonies, and villages.
Meanwhile, the MC will also table additional agendas during the meeting, including a proposal to charge private firms an “advertisement fee” for maintaining and advertising on 35 roundabouts citywide.
“The fee will be increased by 10% annually,” the document mentioned.
In another agenda, the MC plans to enforce a six-month validity period for fire safety certificate applications. If applicants fail to meet requirements within this timeframe, their application will be automatically revoked and the submitted fee forfeited.
Additionally, the civic body’s Finance and Contract Committee (F&CC) will meet on Monday to discuss planting trees and shrubs at the Dadumajra dumping ground.
The ₹32-lakh beautification project aims to landscape the area with plants along the boundary wall, with completion expected in six months.
