Derabassi, 1 March 2025 — Malkiat Singh, alias Maxi, a member of the Goldy Brar gang, was injured in a police encounter at Bhankharpur, Dera Bassi, on Saturday morning while attempting to escape custody, officials said.
Malkiat, a Rajasansi, Amritsar native, allegedly opened fire on police during the escape attempt, hitting a police vehicle. “In retaliation, officers fired back, and a bullet struck his left leg,” said Dera Bassi DSP Bikramjit Singh Brar. He was taken to Dera Bassi Civil Hospital for treatment.
Maxi was recently accused of demanding ₹50 lakh from a Mohali-based builder. A case under Section 308(2) of BNS was registered at IT City, Mohali, on January 20. He and his accomplice, Sandeep, were arrested on production warrants in the case.
His interrogation led to the recovery of a .32-calibre pistol near Ghaggar bridge, Dera Bassi.
“He has multiple cases of extortion and Arms Act violations. When he was brought to recover arms, he took advantage of the situation and fired at the police.
The officers narrowly escaped as the bullet struck their vehicle, prompting them to retaliate,” said Mohali SSP Deepak Pareek.
