New Delhi, 28 December 2024: The Union government has decided to allocate space for a memorial to former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, as conveyed to his family and Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge late Friday, according to the Ministry of Home Affairs.

In a statement titled “Facts of the Matter Regarding Memorial for Former Prime Minister Late Dr. Manmohan Singh,” the ministry confirmed receiving Kharge’s request to create a memorial in Singh’s honor. Shortly after a Cabinet meeting, Home Minister Amit Shah informed both Singh’s family and Kharge of the decision to earmark space for the memorial.

“Preparations for cremation and other formalities can proceed while the allocation of space to a designated trust is finalized,” the ministry added.

Manmohan Singh, who passed away on Thursday at the age of 92, was India’s prime minister from 2004 to 2014 and widely recognized for spearheading the country’s economic reforms.

The Congress criticized delays in locating a site for Singh’s cremation and memorial, describing it as a “deliberate insult” to India’s first Sikh prime minister. Party officials raised objections after the home ministry announced that Singh’s last rites would take place at Nigambodh Ghat on Saturday at 11:45 a.m. with full state honors.
