New Delhi, 1 January 2025: The government has begun the process of selecting a site for a memorial dedicated to former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, with discussions underway involving his family to finalize the location.

According to sources, officials from the Central Public Works Department (CPWD) have already inspected potential sites near the Sanjay Gandhi memorial at Rashtriya Smriti Sthal, identifying several possible spots for the memorial.

Sources confirmed that while no location has been finalized, multiple options are under consideration. The discussions with Singh’s family will play a key role in determining the final site. “The decision on the location will be made in consultation with the family,” one source explained.

Additionally, the government plans to establish a trust to manage the memorial once the land is allocated. This step comes after the Centre communicated its intention to set up the memorial to Singh’s family, following the former prime minister’s death on December 26 at the age of 92 due to age-related complications.

Singh, renowned for spearheading India’s economic reforms, became the subject of political dispute when the Congress criticized the government for conducting his last rites at Nigambodh Ghat. This led to a bitter exchange between the BJP and Congress regarding both the cremation and plans for a memorial.
