Shimla, 13 January 2025: A massive shooting stone killed a 70-year-old woman and her 21-year-old granddaughter Sunday afternoon in Dummi village near Mashobra, Shimla.
The victims, Geeta Devi and Varsha, had ventured into the forest to gather leaves for their cattle. Gaurav Verma, vice pradhan of the Dummi panchayat, said, “They were struck by the stone while collecting leaves, and both died on the spot.”
Witnesses said children playing nearby saw the stone dislodging from higher ground and attempted to warn the women. “It appears they got too frightened to react and couldn’t escape,” Verma added.
Locals alleged the stone came loose due to the use of an earth-moving machine on a field uphill. Police have registered a case and initiated an investigation.
