Amritsar, March 22: A late-night confrontation near a religious site in Kohali village resulted in a shooting that left one local youth injured on Saturday. The incident, which occurred near Ram Tirath, reportedly began as a disagreement over a television set recently donated to the village gurdwara.
According to local resident Rajwinder Kaur, several devotees had gifted an LCD screen to the shrine a few days prior. Tensions rose when a man identified as Harjinder Singh allegedly attempted to move the device to his private residence. This action was reportedly challenged by village sarpanch Gurjant Singh and another local, Gurjit Singh.
The verbal dispute quickly escalated into an exchange of insults between the two parties. Witnesses stated that during the heat of the argument, Gurjant Singh allegedly brandished a pistol and discharged a round. However, the bullet reportedly missed its intended target and struck his own associate, Malkeet Singh.
Lopoke police station officials arrived at the scene shortly after the firing was reported to secure the area. While witnesses have named specific individuals involved in the brawl, authorities have registered a First Information Report (FIR) against unidentified persons as the initial step of the legal process.
“An investigation is currently under way to determine the exact sequence of events,” stated Shamsher Singh, SHO of Lopoke police station. The injured youth is receiving medical attention while police continue to record statements from those present during the clash.
