Gurugram Deputy Mayor Polls Postponed

GURUGRAM, Aug. 11 — The election for Senior Deputy Mayor and Deputy Mayor of the Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG), scheduled for Monday, has been postponed indefinitely, officials said.

MCG Commissioner Pradeep Dahiya cited “administrative reasons” for the delay and said a new date would be announced soon. The posts have been vacant for five months since the mayoral elections.

The postponement comes amid an ongoing tussle between two BJP factions — one led by state minister Rao Narbir Singh and the other by Union Minister Rao Inderjit Singh. Last week, similar political friction played out in the Manesar Municipal Corporation elections, where Narbir’s candidates won both posts after councillors from the Inderjit camp, including the Mayor, skipped the vote.

Sources said a lack of consensus within the BJP on candidate names for the Gurugram posts was the main reason for the delay. “It is for unanimous elections to keep all united. However, if both camps don’t agree, it may come down to voting,” a senior party leader in Chandigarh said.

The BJP, which won 24 of 36 seats in the March MCG polls — securing a majority for the first time — is expected to have the support of four or five Independents, potentially taking its strength to 29.

“It was BJP candidates who won the Manesar MC posts, and BJP candidates will also win the MCG election. The party is united,” Rao Narbir said.
