Haryana Farmers Face Shortage of DAP Fertilizer

Jind, 20 October, 2024: Farmers in Haryana are grappling with a severe shortage of DAP (Di-Ammonium Phosphate) fertilizer crucial for wheat cultivation. Long queues formed at government distribution centers early Saturday morning, as farmers arrived by 6 AM in hopes of securing the vital fertilizer. However, only 900 bags were made available, resulting in each farmer receiving just six bags upon presenting their Aadhaar card.

The situation has become even more urgent as the festival of Karva Chauth approaches and sowing time draws near. Women also joined the lines, reflecting the pressing need for fertilizer.

“Due to the limited quantity of DAP, we are providing just six bags to each farmer,” stated Satyavir, a salesman at the society.

He acknowledged that this small allocation exacerbates the challenges faced by farmers, who require significantly more fertilizer to meet their needs.

Farmers in Jind expressed their frustration over the recurring shortages during the sowing season. “Every year, we face the same problem at this time,” they lamented.

They called for an adequate supply of DAP to ensure timely wheat sowing. Previously, farmers also encountered difficulties obtaining urea during the mustard crop season, highlighting ongoing issues with fertilizer availability.

DAP (Di-Ammonium Phosphate) fertilizer plays a crucial role in wheat cultivation by supplying essential nutrients, particularly nitrogen and phosphorus. Nitrogen promotes robust vegetative growth, enhancing the plant’s ability to produce healthy leaves and stems. Phosphorus is vital for root development, improving nutrient uptake and overall plant strength. This combination supports early growth, flowering, and grain formation, ultimately leading to higher yields.

Moreover, DAP helps improve soil fertility and structure, contributing to better crop resilience against environmental stressors. Applying DAP ensures that wheat plants have the necessary nutrients for optimal growth and productivity throughout the growing season.
