Chandigarh, December 13, 2024: Tensions flared in the Rajya Sabha today as Vice President and Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar engaged in a sharp exchange with Leader of the Opposition and Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge over the ongoing impeachment motion controversy.
The uproar began when TMC MP Derek O’Brien addressed the House, prompting Dhankhar to express frustration, stating, “I am the son of a farmer and will not be weak at any cost.”
In response, Kharge retorted, “If you are a farmer, then I am the son of a labourer,” asserting that the House must operate based on tradition and impartiality.
Kharge further accused Dhankhar of insulting the opposition and accentuated their right to discuss national issues, saying, “We have not come to hear your praise.”
Dhankhar countered, claiming, “The entire country knows whose praise you prefer,” before adjourning the session for the day as the commotion continued.

BJP MP Radha Mohan Das Agarwal criticized the opposition, alleging procedural violations in the impeachment motion.
He pointed out that 14 days are required to discuss such motions in the House, accusing the Congress of disrespecting the Vice President by making preemptive allegations in the media.
The contentious debate has amplified political tensions in Parliament, with both sides holding firm on their stances.
