New Delhi, 27 December 2024 – Dr. Manmohan Singh’s prophetic words from 2014, “I honestly believe history will be kinder to me than the contemporary media or the Opposition parties in Parliament,” have found renewed relevance after his passing at 92. The former Prime Minister died at AIIMS in New Delhi, prompting an outpouring of tributes from across political lines as the nation reflects on his transformative leadership and quiet strength.

Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge invoked Singh’s statement while paying homage, stating, “Undoubtedly, history shall judge you kindly, Dr. Manmohan Singh ji!”

Recalling Dr. Singh’s impact on India’s economic liberalization, Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Aaditya Thackeray said, “As someone born in the 90s, I witnessed how opening India to the world reshaped our nation. He truly placed India on the global stage. While he believed history would be kinder, I think the present must also acknowledge his statesmanship as we bid him a sorrowful goodbye.”

BRS leader KT Rama Rao described Dr. Singh as “a silent architect of modern India, a visionary, and a gracious human being,” while Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy called him “one of the greatest economists, leaders, and reformers of our times.” Reddy added, “India has lost a great son. In his own words, history will treat him far more kindly than his times perhaps did.”

Shashi Tharoor, reflecting on Dr. Singh’s tenure, noted, “Just ten years after his statement, he is already being proven right.”

Dr. Singh’s understated style often belied the monumental impact of his work. As Finance Minister in the 1990s, he spearheaded economic reforms that liberalized India’s economy, fostering rapid growth and global integration. During his tenure as Prime Minister from 2004 to 2014, landmark achievements like the Indo-US civil nuclear agreement and the expansion of social welfare programs underscored his leadership.

Admired across party lines for his intellectual prowess and humility, Dr. Manmohan Singh’s legacy stands as a testament to his vision for India’s transformation.
