India expresses concern over Venezuela crisis

New Delhi, Jan 4: India has avoided condemning the United States’ military action in Venezuela, instead calling for dialogue and restraint as political and security turmoil grips the South American nation following the detention of President Nicolás Maduro.

“Recent developments in Venezuela are a matter of deep concern. We are closely monitoring the evolving situation,” the Ministry of External Affairs said in a statement on Sunday.

Without referring directly to the US operation, New Delhi urged “all concerned” to resolve issues peacefully to ensure regional peace and stability. “India reaffirms its support to the well-being and safety of the people of Venezuela,” the MEA said.

The statement followed large-scale US military strikes in Caracas that led to the capture of President Maduro and his wife. US President Donald Trump described the operation as a decisive show of American power and said US authorities would oversee Venezuela until a “safe, proper and judicious transition” could be ensured.

The developments have unsettled the region, with Colombia reinforcing its border amid fears of refugee flows. Brazil, while calling for calm, criticised the US action as potentially destabilising.

Reports from Caracas indicated widespread panic, power outages, communication disruptions, and shortages of food and fuel. Videos circulating online showed residents fleeing explosions in parts of the capital.

India also issued a travel advisory, asking its nationals to avoid non-essential travel to Venezuela. Indians currently in the country have been advised to restrict movement and remain in close contact with the Indian Embassy in Caracas.

“The Indian mission is in touch with members of the Indian community and will continue to provide all possible assistance,” the MEA said, urging nationals to register their contact details for emergency support.
