Punjab to Reserve 33% Government Jobs for Women

Chandigarh, Jan 4, 2026 – Punjab has announced a historic step to increase women’s participation in government jobs, with 33% of posts across all categories now reserved for women. The decision was approved by the state Cabinet, chaired by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann.

“This policy is not just about equality; it is a guarantee for a better future,” Mann said, underlining the government’s vision of an inclusive administration.

Social Security, Women and Child Development Minister Dr. Baljit Kaur said the reservation will enable women to play a greater role in decision-making and administration. “This step will strengthen the social and administrative framework of Punjab,” she said.

The move complements existing schemes aimed at women’s welfare. Under the Aashirwad Scheme, the government recently released over ₹13 crore to support the marriages of daughters from economically weaker sections. The Mukhyamantri Mahila Samman Yojana also provides financial assistance to women, aiming to boost economic independence.

While female literacy rates in Punjab have improved, female workforce participation remains low. Government data show 25.2% of women were in the workforce in 2022-23, up from 21.1% in 2020-21, compared with a national average of 36%. Experts say the new reservation policy could help bridge this gap.

Officials said the decision reflects the Mann government’s larger goal of promoting social equality and gender justice, moving Punjab closer to the vision of a “Rangla Punjab.”
