PANCHKULA, June 10: A migrant labourer’s years of savings meant for his daughter’s wedding were wiped out in moments after thieves broke into his hutment in Sector 27 and stole gold jewellery stored inside a cupboard, police said Sunday.
The victim, Gauri Paswan, a daily wage worker originally from Bihar, filed a complaint at the Sector 25 police post after discovering the theft. He told the police that both he and his wife Sarita, who works as a domestic help, had left for work in the morning. On returning around 1 p.m., they found their home broken into and the jewellery missing.
“The ornaments were kept aside specifically for my eldest daughter’s marriage. We had been saving little by little for years,” Paswan told officers, visibly shaken.
Paswan lives with his wife and four children—three daughters and a son—in a temporary shelter. The missing jewellery, according to the family, was the most valuable possession they had.
Following the complaint, a case was registered under Sections 305 and 331(3) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita at the Chandimandir police station. Police teams have since visited the site and launched an investigation.
“The theft took place in broad daylight while the family was away at work, which suggests the accused may have been keeping a watch on their routine,” said a police official involved in the probe.
With no surveillance cameras in the area and minimal security around the cluster of hutments, officials say they are relying on local intelligence and nearby residents for leads.
As of now, no arrests have been made. Police said efforts are underway to trace the stolen items and identify those responsible.
