CHANDIGARH, Jan 1 — The new year began on a wet and cold note for residents of Chandigarh, Panchkula and Mohali as light rain and drizzles were recorded across the tricity on Thursday, in line with a forecast issued by the India Meteorological Department.

The intermittent showers, accompanied by overcast skies, led to a further drop in temperatures, intensifying the winter chill across the region. Similar weather conditions were reported from several parts of Punjab and Haryana, where cloud cover and occasional rainfall persisted through the day.

According to the IMD, the rainfall activity is being driven by an active western disturbance currently positioned over North Pakistan, which is influencing weather patterns across northwestern India.

“There is an active western disturbance, and due to its effect, light rainfall is likely at various places in Punjab and Haryana,” said Dr. Naresh Kumar, a scientist at the IMD, while speaking to PTI.

He said the weather system is expected to remain active over the next couple of days, keeping conditions cold and unsettled across the plains as well as the adjoining hill areas.
