CHANDIGARH, Nov 26 — A planned protest outside the Panjab University Vice Chancellor’s office drew only a small gathering on Wednesday, as most attention shifted to a parallel farmers’ assembly at Sector 43’s Dussehra Ground.
Heavy police deployment remained in place around the administrative block, but the demonstration — called by the PU Bachao Morcha — stayed muted through the morning. Protesters said participation was likely to rise once farmer leaders reached the campus.
“Union representatives will come here around 1 pm and speak to students as well,” a Morcha member said, noting that several farmer groups had already begun assembling at the Sector 43 venue, where a stage is being prepared for their address.
The PU Bachao Morcha, supported by over 50 student unions, farmer organisations, social groups and employee bodies, has called for a complete campus bandh demanding immediate notification of Senate elections. A similar call on November 10 had led to clashes on campus.
With the university already declaring a holiday, all departments remained shut and police guarded the administration building. Shops and markets inside the university also stayed closed, adding to the subdued atmosphere.
