Ludhiana, Sept 23 — Amit Kumar, 36, the youngest brother of Ludhiana Youth Congress leader Anuj Kumar, was shot dead in broad daylight at his ahaata — a local tavern-style drinking space — in Sahnewal on Monday evening.

According to eyewitnesses, three unidentified men arrived at the tavern around 10:30 pm, posing as customers. They reportedly ordered food and got into an argument with the workers over a bill of approximately Rs 120. Amit, who was present at the tavern while the manager was on sick leave, intervened in the dispute. The situation escalated, and the assailants allegedly brandished a revolver and opened fire at Amit. He suffered a bullet wound near his heart and died on the spot.

“My brother was just doing his duty, managing the tavern in the manager’s absence,” said Anuj Kumar, 40, general secretary of Ludhiana District Congress Committee. “The men came on a bike without a number plate. Even after he was taken to the hospital, they returned and circled the tavern. We suspect certain people are behind this and have shared names with the police.”

Police have registered a murder FIR at Sahnewal police station based on the complaint of another elder brother, Pramod Kumar. Inspector Gurmukh Singh, Station House Officer, said, “While the argument appears to have been over a minor bill, we are probing all angles to identify the motive and the culprits.”

Amit is survived by his wife and two children, a son and a daughter. He was the youngest of five brothers, and his death has left the family and local community in shock. Authorities are reviewing CCTV footage from the area and questioning witnesses to trace the unidentified assailants.

The investigation is ongoing, and police are exploring all possible motives, including personal vendettas and targeted attacks, while assuring swift action against the perpetrators.
