Amritsar, May 13 — Disciplinary proceedings have been launched against Majitha Deputy Superintendent of Police Amolak Singh and Station House Officer Avtar Singh for gross negligence in connection with the Amritsar hooch tragedy, which has triggered a widespread crackdown on the illicit liquor trade.

Confirming the action on Monday, Punjab Director General of Police Gaurav Yadav announced that both officers are now under departmental inquiry. “Departmental inquiries have been initiated against the DSP and SHO for dereliction of duty in this case,” Yadav posted on social media platform X.

So far, nine individuals have been arrested in connection with the tragedy, including the alleged kingpin behind the racket and several local distributors, Yadav added.

“Methanol, which was procured online, was used to manufacture the spurious liquor,” the DGP said, adding that investigations are ongoing to map the entire network involved in the operation. “We are committed to exposing the complete modus operandi and ensuring all those responsible are brought to justice,” he said.

A case has been registered under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Excise Act, police confirmed.

The tragedy has put a renewed spotlight on enforcement lapses and prompted urgent corrective steps from the state police to prevent further loss of life due to illicit liquor production and sale.
