Zirakpur, July 28 — A joint operation by the police and excise department on Saturday evening led to the arrest of a man allegedly involved in smuggling liquor from Chandigarh and selling it illegally in Zirakpur. The raid took place at Flat Number 77-G in Savitri Green Colony, where officials seized a large stock of alcohol labeled “for sale in Chandigarh only.”
The accused, identified as Mukesh Kumar, was taken into custody after 134 bottles of liquor were recovered from his residence. The seizure included 78 half-bottles and 36 full bottles of London Pride, along with 20 bottles of All Seasons whisky.
“The raid was conducted following a credible tip-off,” said Excise Inspector Gurpreet Singh, who led the search. “The liquor had been sourced from Jannat Beverages Pvt Ltd and Oasis Distilleries Ltd, both based in Chandigarh’s Industrial Area.”
According to the police, Kumar had been smuggling the alcohol from Chandigarh into Punjab territory in violation of excise laws. A case has been registered under Sections 61, 1, and 14 of the Punjab Excise Act.
Kumar has been remanded to judicial custody, and investigators are now examining whether he was operating as part of a broader supply network.
“We are looking into possible links to larger smuggling operations,” a police spokesperson said. “Further questioning is underway.”
