CHANDIGARH, June 9: A 38-year-old tailor from Yamunanagar displayed remarkable presence of mind and quick reflexes when he caught a man accused of snatching his wife’s purse at the Inter-State Bus Terminal (ISBT) in Sector 17, Chandigarh, police said Sunday.
The incident occurred around 11:30 a.m. on Saturday as Manoj Kumar, along with his wife Shiv Kumari and their two children, was boarding a bus at counter number 17 to return home after attending a wedding in Kajheri village.
According to police, the family had just placed their luggage on a front seat when a group of unidentified men, already on board, claimed the seats were reserved for staff. Trusting them, the couple moved to the back of the bus—unaware that Shiv Kumari’s purse had been left behind.
“One of them grabbed my wife’s purse and jumped off the bus,” Manoj said in his complaint. “She noticed and started shouting. I ran after him and caught him near the bus stand. But his two companions managed to escape.”
Manoj held the accused until police arrived at the scene. Officers later registered a case under Sections 303(2) and 317(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, at Sector 17 police station.
Police said efforts are underway to identify and apprehend the two other suspects who fled.
