CHANDIGARH, July 14 — Congress MP Manish Tewari has stepped down as the chairperson of the Sub-Committee on Art, Culture, Tourism and Heritage Preservation of the Chandigarh Administrator’s Advisory Council, citing concerns over political imbalance and lack of expert leadership in committee appointments.
In a letter addressed to Punjab Governor and Union Territory Administrator Gulab Chand Kataria, Tewari expressed disapproval over the composition of sub-committees, noting that while presidents of other political parties in Chandigarh were named chairpersons, Chandigarh Territorial Congress Committee (CTCC) president Harmohinder Singh Lucky was appointed only as a member of a single sub-committee.
“This is a serious anomaly,” Tewari wrote. “Ideally, no political person should head these committees. Such roles are best suited to individuals with domain expertise or specialised knowledge in the respective fields.”
The Congress MP added that in the interest of parity among political parties and proper representation, Lucky should be appointed as chairperson of the Art, Culture, Tourism and Heritage Preservation Sub-Committee. “In that manner, the presidents of a substantial number of major political parties from Chandigarh would be placed on an equal footing,” he stated.
Tewari’s resignation is seen as a symbolic protest against what he views as unequal treatment of the Congress in the Advisory Council’s functioning, and a call for more inclusive and merit-based leadership in key committees.
