Chandigarh, 19 October, 2024: The Bhagwant Mann-led government in Punjab is taking major steps to support AIDS victims in society. During the first meeting of the State Council, Health and Family Welfare Minister Dr. Balbir Singh announced plans to provide crucial assistance to personages living with HIV in the state. A key initiative includes approving monthly financial aid of ₹1,500 for affected persons.
The government said that this progressive decision aims to change societal attitudes toward AIDS victims and ensure they receive the support they need with the State Council proposing an additional facility that will transport infected patients to anti-retroviral therapy centers from their homes free of charge once a month.
In a further effort to enhance the quality of life for those affected, the government plans to establish a task force dedicated to assisting individuals dealing with dementia related to HIV. This initiative seeks to improve employability and help individuals lead dignified lives.
From the beginning of his administration, Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has stressed reaching out to those affected by HIV to understand their daily challenges and eliminate barriers that prevent them from accessing welfare programs. The government has directed the Industries and Labor Departments to implement an HIV/AIDS policy in industrial establishments with 100 or more employees. These establishments are also required to appoint grievance officers to address discrimination against HIV victims.
The government has called on the public to shift their perception of AIDS victims, stressing that they have the right to live normal lives. It is crucial to recognize that HIV is not transmitted through casual contact but through unprotected sex or the use of reused needles.
This initiative has rekindled hope among many victims who had lost faith in the possibility of a better life, inspiring them to embrace a more positive outlook for the future.
