Chandigarh, 1 February 2025: On her first day in office, newly elected Mayor Harpreet Kaur Babla set an active tone by convening two crucial meetings with city councillors and municipal corporation (MC) officials while also visiting the Dadumajra dumping ground and legacy mining site to assess the progress of the city’s waste management and bio-mining projects.

Babla’s office witnessed a steady stream of visitors, including councillors, officials, and residents, who came to congratulate her with sweets and flowers. Her family also joined in the celebrations at the mayor’s office.

Among her first actions, Babla scheduled a meeting with councillors and MC officials for February 3 at 3 pm in the MC Assembly Hall.

Describing it as a “formal tea party,” she mentioned, “The discussion will cover key city issues, including revenue generation and municipal governance.”

Further, she announced a General House meeting on February 7, during which elections for the Finance and Contract Committee (F&CC) will be held. Councillors have been asked to submit nominations by February 3.

As per the MC Act, the newly elected mayor is required to initiate F&CC elections in the first meeting. The five-member committee plays a crucial role in approving projects with budgets of up to ₹50 lakh.

“After the February 7 meeting, the MC’s annual budget for the fiscal year 2025-26 will be presented before the F&CC. Soon after, a budget meeting of the MC will be called,” Babla stated.

During her visit to the Dadumajra landfill, Babla was accompanied by Municipal Commissioner Amit Kumar and other officials who briefed her on the waste management and bio-mining project’s progress.

Raising the need for environmental improvements, she instructed officials to clean and beautify the site.

“The dumping ground must be transformed into a cleaner, greener space. Neem and other oxygen-rich trees should be planted along the boundary to enhance the area’s appearance,” she said.

Officials informed the mayor that the entire site is expected to be cleaned before August this year.
